ECO DRUMS began in 1995 out of a need to provide quality Australian made hand drums without destroying Native timbers.
Camphor Laurel was chosen because it is a weed tree on the Eastern coast of Australia, mainly in Northern New South Wales and Southern Queensland. Camphor originally came from China as a decorative street tree. It has grown prolifically and the seed is spread easily by birds. A timber widely used by cabinet makers, it deprives native trees of growing space because of its invasive root systems. Trees are now being culled (by law) and it is the limbs from these trees that Eco Drums are utilizing for their drums.
Partners in the venture from its inception, Cliff and Kerrie Salaun provide quality drums in workshop venues and as finished pieces.
Workshop participants are provided with a drum shell, skin, rope, rings and assistance in creating their own drum. When the drum is complete, simple rhythms and correct technique are taught.
Eco Drums also provide a 'hospital' service where drums are tensioned, re-shaped and skinned. If you have a problem with an existing drum, give us a call. Information is free, assistance by email or over the telephone are welcome.
More than a workshop/ stall venue at festivals on the East coast of Australia, Eco Drums provide entertainment and encourage patrons to participate in drumming sessions. Drum playing classes have proved very popular and everyone DOES have rhythm.
Eco Drums understand the benefit of hand drumming as a meditational and healing tool, as a weapon against aggression and boredom, as a boost to self confidence and as a way to develop group or community participation. We teach the beauty of playing a drum quietly as an instrument of meditation and loudly as an instrument of power. We teach where each is appropriate and the etiquette of drumming. The drum is a musical instrument which does not require traditional musical skills to begin playing. Simple rhythms played in a group situation can be moving, exhilarating and empowering; attributes sought by many of today’s society.
Eco Drums endeavour to provide ethical service with on-going back up and long-term friendship.
